Co-Regulation in Play Therapy: Harnessing the Power of Relational Neuroscience to Improve Your Practice

Relational Neuroscience offers play therapists an important framework for understanding the brain in the context of relationships, bringing greater understanding about why play therapy works. This presentation will review current research in Relational Neuroscience and the ways in which play therapists can utilize this knowledge to confidently lean into allowing the relationship to facilitate the power of play therapy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of brain development when working with play therapy clients and how this relates to their play therapy client.
- explain how to use co-regulation as a building block to self-regulation in the play therapy room and articulate why children with a history of complex trauma need an increased amount of presence and co-regulation in play therapy.
- apply treatment interventions that focus on connection and co-regulation with play therapy clients.
- demonstrate ways to work with parents to increase their capacity for connection and co-regulation with play therapy clients and in the playroom.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS: Robin Wiley, LPC, Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor™ received her MA in Counseling from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM in 1999. Since that time, Robin has worked in a variety of settings including a residential program, as a mobile play therapist to children who had witnessed domestic violence on the Eight Northern Pueblos in New Mexico, a VOCA funded agency working with children, youth and their parents, private practice, a local CSB and now she owns HeartSpace Counseling in Roanoke, VA. Heartspace is a group practice providing quality services to children, adolescents and their families. When she is not working, Robin enjoys spending time with her wife, their animals and friends. Her preferred form of self-care is laughing!
Sarah Harig, LPC, Registered Play Therapist™ received her MS in Counseling and Human Development from Radford University in 2015. While obtaining her degree and since that time, Sarah has worked in a variety of settings to include a local CSB providing school based services, intensive in home counseling, and as a bereavement counselor for children and families with a loved one in hospice care. Sarah currently works as a counselor at Family Service of Roanoke Valley in Roanoke, VA, a VOCA funded agency, providing services to children, adolescents, and families with a variety of presenting concerns. She also serves as the VAPT Roanoke and New River Valley Chapter Co-Chair and Adjunct Professor in the Counselor Education Department at Radford University. In her free time, Sarah enjoys spending time with her two rescue dogs, watching reality TV competitions, volunteering in local politics, and searching for the best mint chocolate chip ice cream.
VIRTUAL: This will be a virtual meeting. Participants will be awarded APT CONTACT CE after successful completion of a post test. Participants must be visible throughout the presentation. Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by APT for 3 CONTACT CE Hours.
MIAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to Play Therapy. APT Approved Provider 99-050. MIAPT maintains responsibility for the program.
